Almost Nice: La Chapelle de Notre Dame

I couldn't let Easter go by without a photo of a Church. This is La Chapelle de Notre Dame du Pre du Brusc and this is all that remains of a huge basilica that was built here in the 12th century though there's been a church here since the 5th century...which is a long time.
I've read that it marked a stopping place on the pilgrim's way to Santiago de Compostela.

The site is certainly a pleasant one and in the early summer there are musical concerts in the grounds and church.

There was a time when you could go into the chapel which has a serene simplicity but those days are gone and nowadays you have to make an appointment to pray.

That's a shame, isn't it...I noticed the same nonsensical rules, elsewhere...

It's surreal to think that the pilgrims walked the same ground as we do, 15 centuries ago!

Just beautiful Angela. Love the olive tree photo too. Where is this chapel? Is it near to the Matisse museum? The olives remind me of the grounds around there?

it is a sad sign of the times that churches have to be cloased - it's the same almost everywhere now. Beautiful church, and lovely olive trees. I can almost feel the heat!

Nice place! I've just been to Santiago de Compostela, but with the delay in posting it will take some time until I show the pics. It's a must anyhow!

Such a lovely place. I enjoy the old archetecture very much. Not many old buidings in the new frontier and most are made of wood here in western canada.

Angela,
this church has a lot of character to me. i wonder how many people has passed by this place in all these years. i always think of that when I'm in such an old place! That makes me feel like I'm a little part of history! :)
