Theme Day: Nice and Edinburgh

As Edinburgh was a bit too far north for me to visit this Summer my thanks to Dido of Edinburgh DP for saving theme day for me by supplying this photo which shows the beauty of the clock very clearly and the text to go with it:

One of Edinburgh's most popular tourist attractions, the Floral Clock is located right in the city centre, in West Princes Street Gardens, next to the Mound. Commissioned on the 10th June, 1903, this is the oldest floral clock in the world. It is replanted once a year, in a topical design with around 35,000 colourful plants. Previously on show only between June and October, from 2003 a planting of frost-resistant plants takes it through the winter season.
The clock is 3.5m (12 feet) in diameter and the hands, which are driven by an electric motor, weigh more than 60kg (130 lbs). The electrically-driven mechanism replaced a clock-work motor in 1973, which had required to be wound daily.

I didn't know you were twinned with Edingburgh. A wonderful city to be twinned with, and the image really suits the theme you have had of floral art this week.

How nice that Nice is paired with Edinburgh. Excuse the pun, I have wanted to use it for so long I couldn't help myself! This is so much fun learning about all the sister cities.

I had no idea such a clock existed! A nice exchange indeed.

A nice choice from your sister city. Coincidentally, Adelaide's sister city, Christchurch, has lovely floral clock too. Thanks for dropping by.

Beautiful photo--so full of life!

Mahalo once again for sending me a photo of Nice for the theme day. I've just posted it, and I'm blessed by your kind participation.

It continually surprises me which city is twinned with which and I wonder how it all came about. Nice photo of Edinburgh, a beautiful city indeed.

I have often wondered what kind of job it would be to wind a floral clock and it must have been a big one as it was replaced by an electric motor.

That is some fabulous clock and must be just beautiful almost any time of the year. Does it also chime or ding dong or anything? Nice post for the sister city theme.

And thanks for coming around and seeing my post of Sendai, Japan.

It's a great post for theme day, esp. because of the cooperation between the bloggers. Super!!

not too many floral clocks around these days - I remember one in Whitby in the 60s - nice to see it.

I didn't know this was your sister city either! This clock is fascinating!

Amazing the number of plants to create this pretty clock. Master gardeners must care for this clock garden.

I apologize for the trouble you have opening my blog. Interesting, as I am using Firefox to upload and write to it.

D'oh. It never occurred to me to reach out to one of the CDPB's for Aspen's sister cities. What a cool exchange.
