Le Temple des Pains

If I lived in the centre of Nice this is where I would buy my daily bread. If you have a look at the carte you can see the choice available. Now, I'm very fond of olive bread with anything savoury or even just to eat on its own which is what I did in the car on the way home. Which would you choose?

Sunday Breakfast

Breakfast in the Cours Saleya in Nice; it's the weekend, the market stalls are just setting up, the sun is pleasantly warm and you've got your cup of coffee and newspaper. Paradise!

Preparations For Carnival.

Carnival starts on the 16th February and finishes on the 4th March and preparations have been underway to decorate the city. These strange characters appeared overnight on the Cours Saleya.
The theme this year is "King of the Grand Free For All" which doesn't exactly trip off the tongue. It's a reference to the Rugby World Cup which will take place this year in France and, of course, the free-for-all of the French elections.
The spirit of Carnival is already permeating the streets; this waiter dashed over to pose for me...
Expect to hear more about Carnival.

The 3 Devils

There's just something about their eyes that makes them look wicked, I think, though I can't really figure out how you can capture that in a carving.
Appropriately enough this is above the door of a bar on the Cours Saleya.

La Socca

The Cours Saleya in the heart of old Nice on a Saturday morning it's 11.30 and people are finishing their shopping and looking for refreshment.
This is supposed to be the best Socca maker in the market but then it's the only one I've ever seen. Socca is made from olive oil and chick pea flour scraped into a large pancake and cooked over charcoal. Hot it has a warm, peppery nuttiness and people walk through the market ripping pieces off because cold it's not so delicious.
